New year, new norms: championing mental health in Black/African Australian communities

Why normalising mental health conversations is crucial? How can we empower each other to seek support? What tools and resources can help us thrive together in the new year?

The new year, a new perspective

As we welcome the new year, many of us reflect on past experiences and set intentions for a better future. For Black, African Australian and the wider communities, this is an opportunity to challenge mental health stigmas and foster open and honest conversations. Mental health impacts every aspect of our lives yet it remains a sensitive topic influenced by systemic challenges, cultural expectations and intersecting identities. Let us work together to change that narrative this year.

As a mental health nurse and founder of Tabvuma Mental Health, I have witnessed the growing need for culturally safe spaces where individuals and communities can heal and thrive. This growing need, coupled with the strength I see in those around me, has fueled my passion to create safe and culturally responsive spaces for healing and growth.

Tabvuma Mental Health was born out of a necessity and inspiration from the stories and resilience within our communities. Among our many goals, we are working to normalise and increase mental health conversations in Black/African Australian and other underrepresented communities. Let us continue to prioritise mental health in 2025, not just as an individual journey but as a collective movement to uplift our entire community.

The Tabvuma Mental Health mission

Tabvuma Mental Health was created to address the unique challenges faced by Black/African Australian and underrepresented communities. Many individuals endure silent battles amplified by cultural stigma, systemic barriers and limited access to culturally responsive services. Recognising this unmet need, we envisioned a world where people with diverse and intersecting experiences achieve and sustain optimal mental wellbeing.

Our mission is simple yet transformative: to CARE by helping individuals and communities thrive through mental health support that is Culturally responsive and inclusive, Accessible, Respectful and Empowering.

At Tabvuma Mental Health, our approach is inspired by the turtle totem which is a symbol of resilience, transformation, strength and steady progress. Just as the turtle carries its home wherever it goes, we encourage individuals to find their strength and safety within themselves, to embody their inner resilience and to move forward at their own pace. This philosophy guides our work, encouraging individuals to reconnect with their inner resilience and build a foundation for long-term wellness. Similar to the turtle’s steady journey, we believe in patient and sustainable growth. Mental wellness is not about quick fixes, it is about fostering resilience and empowerment over time.

Empowering our communities to thrive

In many Black and African Australian cultures, mental well-being is deeply intertwined with physical, spiritual and communal practices. At Tabvuma Mental Health, we honour and validate these diverse perspectives and ensure our services feel genuine and accessible. Normalising mental health conversations starts with education and action and we are committed to bridging the gap between cultural understanding and mental wellness.

That is why at Tabvuma Mental Health, we have launched our free mental health care package as an introduction to self-care and mental wellness. Our free mental health care package includes:

  • Self-assessments: help confidentially guide individuals to reflect on their mental health and can be conversation starters with trusted people.
  • Self-care worksheet: focused on body awareness, they help individuals with identifying physical signs of stress and provides guided activities to attune to their body signals.
  • Black Mentality Podcast: passion project seeking to enhance the mental health awareness and literacy for African/ Black-Australians.
  • Gratitude and Affirmation Hunt: – a fun and reflective game to help you celebrate your personal growth and cultural identity

Why did we specifically focus on body awareness? In many Black/African Australian cultures, we may often first notice signs of mental distress through physical symptoms. The physical symptoms (or sensations) can include an upset stomach, persistent fatigue or discomfort or tension in the shoulders. By recognising physical sensations and linking them to our emotions (in the workbook located in the ‘Getting Started‘ mental health care package), we can bridge the gap between body and mind. It is a small but powerful step toward recognising and naming our mental health experiences, paving the way for deeper healing. Together, we can create a culture of thriving where seeking mental health support is seen as a sign of strength rather than weakness.
